Frock it like it's hot

While in Sydney this week I was lucky enough to visit Frock Stars at the Powerhouse Museum (Open 22 April - 10 October), 2 1/2 hours later I left with a massive smile permanently fixed to my face.  If you get a chance you have to go and see it, the opportunity to view a Dion Lee dress up close was fan-freaking-tastic.  No picture showed this dress in all its elegance, the intricate detail and the eatable sorbet blue was breathtaking.

The exhibition only got better; stepping through the door instantly you are met with a runway of the most inspirational and eye catching pieces from each year of Australian Fashion Week.  Then there were examples of the contents within the front row goodie bags, jealously doesn't even come close to the feeling after seeing the countless designer products they recieve.  With excitement bubbling out of me I then plonked myself on a front row seat enabling me to listen to all the big buyers and editors as they discussed what they look for and how they feel when watching a show.

This exhibition had so many interactive things to do and every process was explained.  The big names all had videos and games. Examples of what it is like for every person involved in Australian Fashion Week  - PR people, production companies, makeup and hair stylists, models and designers - is explored and dissected.

I normally don't sit and listen to every video or read every card in a museum but nothing could pull me away.  I watched casting calls and the speedy perfection of makeup artists.  Time just escapes you in this exhibition, I could have stayed much longer but an airplane was waiting with my name on it.  It was love and just reconfirmed that this is the area I have to get into, nobody what!

Below are some pictures from the exhibition.

Vintage Secrets

I promised you the feature that was printed in the Fashion Journal (Issue 98), so here it is... now credited.

Ask any fashionista and she'll tell you one thing; nothing completes an outfit quite like a one-off vintage find.  Take some time away from the high street and get the girls together for a day of vintage shopping.  Dig, rummage and trawl through the racks - you'll never know what unique treasures you might find.

Vintage and recyled fashion promises its fair share of trashy pieces, but hidden amongst the spandez and crochet there are sure to be some gems.  Try on massive minks, retro dresses, leather jackets, funky flannies and eccentric shoes.  Channel your inner Marilyn, Audrey and Twiggy, and get kitted out in everything from weird to wacky to wonderful.  Sound like fun?  Here's the ultimate guide to vintage shopping in Melbourne.

The city's vintage movement was led by the north, so this is a fitting place to start.  If vintage shoes, boots and bags are your thing, look no further than Currency (246 Brunswick St, Fitzroy).  Here you'll find accessories that will effortlessly transform your wardrobe from drab to fab.

Just around the corner is Nook (258 Johnston St, Fitzroy), a fairly new addition to the vibrant vintage shopping scene north of the city.  This store opened in January this year and has an incredible collection of vintage apparel for guys and girls, along with homewares and a wide range of accessories.  With an incredible collection of one off pieces of costume jewellery from the UK and super helpful staff, Nook is fast becoming one of our favourite vintage stops.

Head to the northern end of Lygon Street and you'll soon stumble across The Pink Shop/The Shop With No Name (136 Lygon St, Brunswick East).  This quirky boutique offers uber-cool pieces at refreshingly affordable prices.  With shoes, jeans, dresses, belts and everything in between, the store will inspire you to get creative and express your individual style.

Clothes aren't the only vintage goods worthy of your cash.  Vintage Garage (318 Smith St, Collingwood) has just opened and we're already hooked.  Spend hours rummaging through the piles of old radios, telephones, TVs, couches, bookcases, lamps and other shabby-chic decor.  Finally set your sights on their collection of fashion and accessories.  We think we may have died and gone to vintage heaven!

Come back to earth and take a bayside detour to Hampton.  Vintage Rose (402 Hampton St, Hampton) offers divine bespoe and vintage inspired fashion.  The gorgeous and talented girls here work with vintage lace and other fabrics to create their lovely designs.  Take advantage of the special styling service and you'll come out looking head-to-toe 'vintalicious'.  And it's nice to know that the vintage aesthetic is achievable sans the musty scent.

Next call the boys and get them to meet you at Recycle Republic (125 Auburn Rd, Hawthorn).  Check out the amazing vintage finds amongst sample collection from Scandinavian and European labels for men, women and children.  Laugh at the guys trying to squeeze into skinny pants or wrestle them into a grandpa hat.  They'll forgive the force when they see how stylish they can look on the cheap.

A vintage shopping spree wouldn't be complete without a fur coat fix, so squeeze in a visit to Linda Black (151 Chapel St, Windsor).  Make like Carrie Bradshaw or Cruella De Vil and parade around in full length coats or mid length jackets.  If you're not comfortable covered in fur, invest in a little mink stole for a hint of vintage glamour.

You've managed to giggle your way through racks and racks of unknown and bizarre clothes.  It's finally time to grab some designer vintage.  Our Fabulous Wardrobe (Shop 4, Village Way Arcade, 501 Toorak Rd, Toorak) is a treasure trove of recycled high-end gear.  Think Chanel, YSL, Prada and Versace - pure luxury at a fraction of the price.

Still want more?  ML Vintage (Suite 3, 7 Almeida Cresent, South Yarra) has one of the biggest and most impressive collections of recylced designer clothing we've ever seen.  With a whole wall dedicated to Missoni, if you've saved your pennies and are ready for a big vintage splurge, this is definitely the place to do it.

By the end of the day your feet will be aching and your wallet will probably look a little thin, but it will all be worthwhile for a day of fun and one-off purchases.

Toying Around

I am toying up whether the idea of this is cool or not, "Kidult" play-themed products.  Lego has just launched a line of adult jewellery that is adorned with, well, lego pieces.  It seems this is beoming a new trend with Play-Doh also messing around with a perfume line.  What's next, Barbie bringing out an adult fashion line?  Cabbage Patch kids making hair products?  Action Men punching out cuff links?

When I checked out some of Lego's jewellery I have to admit - some of it - was rather cute, but I'm skeptical to why they're doing this.  Are they just money greedy or aren't the kids whining enough for their produce?  Or is that the same thing?  So many questions, so little time, for kidult is upon us.  We either have to hide under the bed or beg out parentals (bosses) for some extra cash and relish this new trend.

Tailor Made

Sad news today, my feature wasn't published in the Fashion Journal.  Good news, neither were the other interns, so it wasn't just mine.  I know that shouldn't make me happy but it does.  The work was done so I thought I'd post it for you lot.  You may recall I've done a similar story but this one has a couple of recommendations.  I'm not going to lie, I don't have the final edit but still enjoy this version and send in your (constructive) criticism.  I nearly forgot, I did get a short feature published in FJ which I will post later this week.  Again there is some bad news, I wasn't credited for my 700 words.  Ah well next time... cross my fingers.  The life of an intern!

Love Me.

Clothes are made on mass, it's a fact.  Chain stores produce thousands of the same top, shirt, dress, pants, jeans and accessories.  It is hard to wear truly unique clothes in commercial Australia for it seems they value money over quality and diversity.  There comes a time when you don’t want to regurgitate trends.  When this day hits there is only one thing to do: get on the custom-made bandwagon.

Businessmen have been privy to this information for decades.  Bespoke has been around since the 19th Century.  It is traditionally when shirts and suits have been tailored for men.  Custom-made clothing has only developed since the beginning of this long-established art form and now you can get shoes, jeans, jewellery, t-shirts and underwear all made to your exact specifications.

Don’t think plain, drab and boring.  St Looi Blues in Sydney will teach you that even the quirkiest person will be able to create their next shoe obsession.  They have a range of different leathers and fabrics.  St Looi Blues has even more colours and prints than your heart could desire.  Every wanted emerald green flats?  How about floral printed leather lace ups?  Or even black, brown, green and blue striped shoes? Nothing is out of reach, and all your dreams could be answered.

If your dream of the perfect shoe is a little less ‘epic’ then Shoes of Prey may have the answer.  They’re an online store started by self proclaimed “fashion geeks”, Mike Knapp, Michael Fox and Jodie Fox.  Their current range offers more than 3 trillion combinations and continues to grow.

Every corner you turn there seems to be ‘muffin tops’ oozing out at you.  Max Olinjnk is helping to stop this unfortunate trend through his company Note To Self.  Olinjnk makes bespoke jeans as well as his general collection.  For men his styles range from straight leg, easy fit and skinny stretch.  For women he can create low-waist stretch, medium-waist stretch, high-waist stretch and tailored high waist jeans.

“It can get really collaborative and creative.  Someone might want some complex leather trims and fit requirements, or it might be really minimal, they might just have really long legs,” Olijnyk says in an interview with The Australian.

There is a reason bespoke has been around for decades.  The clothes are classic and sophisticated.  Oscar and Oscar offers tailoring services throughout Australia with their headquarters in Melbourne.  Each piece is highly crafted using traditional methods.  As they note on their website Coco Chanel once said, “The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks best on you.”  Tailoring allows for you to have outfits that suit your body-shape and complexion.

If the traditional isn’t your flavour bespoke can still be useful.  Borrie’s Tailors in Queensland is for the eccentric.  Borrie’s Tailors enjoys experimenting.  Most tailors only use natural fibres such as wool, silk and linen but they make shirts and suits out of lycra, spandex and lurex.  They push the boundaries of colour and patterns by creating bright pink, blue, yellow, paisley and purple garments.

Now you have a head-to-toe tailored outfit, but your opinions aren’t over yet.  Jewellery is another area where you can purchase custom-made pieces.  I’m not talking engagement rings and opal earrings.  House of Riches in Perth allows for the customer to become the designer.  They collaborate with you to put your ideas into reality.

Made by White ships its designs all over Australia.  They make brooches, necklaces, earrings, bobby pins and buttons from plastic and wood.  Made by White is most famous for their already designed pieces yet they do offer custom made jewellery.  All you have to do is go on their website and fill in the form specifying what you picture the end result to look like.

All evidence points to the fact that bespoke, tailoring and custom made pieces only manages to enrich your life.  Go on, get creative and let all your clothing dreams become a reality.

Baby got big... and I like it

Big is beautiful!  Three Drawer Down, a seriously wicked and quirky store in Fitzroy, is showing us the way in big products.  There may be no reason to own these products but really, who needs a point when you're this cool.  The best thing to do is scroll down and check out the photos because words seem to only moot these products.  One last thing; don't be fooled by the front of the store, it may not look that spectacular but once you step through those doors you'll never want to leave.

A boot worth an Oscar speech

I FINALLY have a pair of boots that are comfortable, fashionable, timeless, real leather and which I love.  It's an amazing feeling after 21 years of waiting.  Where did I find them?  Well surprisingly it was not in the fine fashionable city of Melbourne, these little stunners were purchased from Hobart, Tasmania.  Every so often that place surprises everybody by actually selling something worthy of our cash.  Check out Sole Solutions if you head to the chilly, hilly state, for the rare gem can be found.  These boots are by Bruno Premi and totally worth the money.  Ok its time for a bit of an 'Oscars' moment; I'd like to thank my parents for buying these boots and realising how much they will enrich my life.  I would also like to give a shout out to my mum and the shop assistant for making me realise how cute these boots were, without which I may never have brought them.  It's true, sometimes your parents do know best!

Mixing it up

Spring is all about mixing the masculine with the feminine.  The easiest way I've found to do this is by buying a pair of army/grunge ankle boots and pairing it with a tutu skirt, flowing dress or anything pastel.

I have to admit I'm not totally sold on this whole idea.  I believe only a hand-full of girls can pull this look off because the attitude is just as important as the styling.  If you are going to attempt this please make sure you wear the clothes not the other way around.  With that said, if you've got the moves then this style is going to make you look sexy and comfortable.

As Jenna Lyons (creative director for J. Crew) told Oprah, if you are a fashion novice then the best thing to do is pair different textures, fabrics and styles.  This trend really does comply and lives up to her fabulous advice.

Store Profile: Thread Den

Thread Den is a seriously awesome shop.  It all started in 2007 when four girls decided to bond over their love of fashion and all things vintage.

Thread Den's sewing lounge was the first step for the company and became immediately popular.  In March 2010 Brunswick street was graced with their new shop providing a space for emerging designers.

I think this place is brilliant; i can buy a pre-made dress or go upstairs and get some vintage patterns.  If you really want you can go into the sewing room and let your creature juices flow in-front of a sewing machine.  A novice at sewing?  Thread Den provides classes for adults and children.  The only question left to ask is, when do I start?

Leather Loving

Leather.  I fell in love with leather this winter.  Please don't think I'm talking about 'manly' leather or 'back to the 80s' leather, I love feminine inspired leather.  What do I mean by this?  Well I love when you take a leather skirt or dress and either the designer has used a very girly pattern, or you match it with a cute floral blouse, or perhaps a sequined top.  I love it when you just change the colour of the leather and make it pink, red, baby blue.  This morning I found Aje was on the same track as me.  Have a look at some of their leather skirts and dresses.  They are a tad masculine but all have some element of being very feminine and girly.

Drop your Crotch

I've officially named this 'bitch week'.  Drop-crotch pants are my idea of hell.  I'm not totally sure that drop-crotch is the correct terminology but it's a nice bit of imagery, don't you think?  I suppose if you wear drop-crotch pants there is no need to worry about wedgies, visible panty lines, or the dreaded cameltoe.  On the other hand you look like you're wearing a nappy.  How on earth can this be good?  People grow out of them for a reason.  Next time you pick up a pair of these pants ask yourself one question, do you really want to wear droopy drawers?  I think you'll find the answer is no.

Jumping-jack-suits

I'm a tad scared about jumpsuits coming back into fashion.  They're unflattering on any body type and they give you a big butt.  Worst of all, they make it impossible to pee.  Imagine you have gone out for a day of shopping.  When you've finally found something you want (a cute tee) you realize your bladder really wants to take a tinkle.  There is only one top left and another person is eyeing it off.  If you buy the top then you are going to pee yourself in-front of a whole bunch of strangers.  But because it takes 20 hours to get undressed you can't pee or you'll miss out on the top.  The thought runs through your head, if only I wore a pair of shorts and a top.  I would never have gotten into such a pickle.  So I hope this story has taught you something, forget jumpsuits, they aren't worth it.... ever!

Plus, don't write on pain killers.  It makes for bad writing.

Me and my love

I apparently have to much time on my hands now that uni has finished for the semester.  All I seem to do is find things to buy.  This dress is from General Pants Co.  I can just imagine it with a pair of black opaque stockings and some insanely sexy ankle boots, specifically a pair from Nine West that I'm stopping myself from buying.  Dress is $79 online.  Grab it while you can.  Boots on sale for $239.  Going once, going twice, gone.

Me and my love

A bowl.  Not just any bowl.  A green bowl.  A randomly opened green bowl.  Many questions need answering about who and why this bowl was created.  Still, it is worthy of being a "me and my love".  I may not understand it but I would put it in my house.  A bowl in need of a thesis is a bowl worthy to grace a tabletop.  Designed by Eva Solo and named Smiley bowl.  Available in six colours.

Photos say a thousand words

Photos say a thousands words.  Instead of stringing together a bunch of words only creating a long rambling thought, I will leave you with a bunch of photos creating a long rambling visual dialogue.  Summer seems far away but I assure you it's not.  With a blink of an eye the beach will be swarmed with 1950s inspired bathers.  Soak up the (imaginary) sun, and ponder what tans lines will occur from these bad boys.

It might just be a byline

The next issue of the Fashion Journal will have a little piece of me in it.  I'm just a teeny bit excited.  I think I might even get a byline.  I may just frame it.  Pathetic i know, but this is a mile stone for me.  I've been working as an intern at FJ for a month now and totally loving it.  All that focusing does take it out of me.  Having to constantly sound witty, funny, smart and write well is a lot of pressure for this novice.  I'm not used to be relying on me.  Hopefully I will start to think I'm actually good at this whole writing thing.  Until that day all I've got to go on is my gut feeling.  I'll post the pieces up when they come out.

Me and my love

It's your lucky week; two doses of 'Me and my love'.  Grazed Youth has some unbelievable cute clothes.  It was established in 2008 by Amelia Thompson.  Her pieces take me back to childhood.  A time where you can walk around in a Batman outfit and not be judged.  Kids don't have inhibitions and these clothes will challenge you to push boundaries with what you wear.  My advice is to just remember that you look cute in the dress.  If you tell yourself this you will own the clothes, not the other way around.  This one particular dress is really quirky and playful.  Just remember to have fun with Grazed Youth and not take yourself to seriously in the clothes.

Me and my love

Just to prove my wish list isn't only build up around shoes, here is another accessory I'm a little in love with; a handbag.  It's called Allie.  It's available online from Nellie & Me.  As the website says; its "a great medium sized bag with the option of a longer strap for wearing across the body.  The school satchel shape is perfect worn back with this season's hot trends."

It would be perfect to take to school and also to strut around the shops.  Somehow my money is M.I.A so i guess its going to have to wait.

Virtual Sample Sale

Usually I'm not a fan of online shopping.  There are so many questions to be answered.  So many things can go wrong.  Plus I love shopping for the experience.  I love going out and looking at all the pretty clothes.  I love to touch them; to feel the soft silk run between my fingers or the fluffy texture of features.  Shopping includes all the sense; touch, smell, sight and sound.  I love how clothes drape off the wooden hangers, glistening under store lights.  I appreciate how the mirrors somehow half your body size and increases your height.  I even love standing at the counter and handing over my card.  The excitement builds within you as realization hits; what the shop assistant is wrapping up... it's yours!  It's a wonderful experience.

But somedays, when it is cold and raining, all you want to do is shop without leaving the house.  You want to stay in your PJs.  You don't want to trek all the way to the city.  When this mood hits you have to go to Thread People; a online store that is practically a virtual sample sale.  All you need to do is sign up - its free - and then start shopping.

Designers feature for a certain period of time.  You are sent an email to notify you of what sales are about to start.  For instance you can go on the website now and buy pieces by Stella McCartney or Fernando Frisoni.  If this doesn't appeal to you then wait the extra couple of days and check out clothes (and accessories) from Pratten or Chinese Laundry.  Thread People gives a whopping 75% off clothes.  Now when most stores say this they don't really mean it.  They have one horrific looking top for 75% off and the rest gets a measly 5%.  At Thread People they don't lie.  So get shopping in your bummy clothes and reap the rewards.

Lets get nude

The other day I was walking down the street and in the corner of my eye I saw a lady half-naked.  To be honest I was shocked.  Who would do a thing like this?  Who forgets to put their clothes on?   How has she not felt the very obvious chill?  The last time I saw a naked person on the street they were drunk.  They had to be.  He was waving his penis around; trying to recreate the “meat spin” for his unwilling audience.  Was this lady drunk?  Was she on drugs?  Was she just very proud of her body?  Had she recently lost a lot of weight?

It began to rain and I awoke from my questioning.  The realisation swept over me, she was not naked at all.  She was just a ‘trendy fashionista’.  A young lady who realised the whole city is going to look naked next season.  This year neutral colours were prominently featured during Australian Fashion Week.  I am going to bet the 5 cents in my bank account that this trend will sneak into stores; expensive and cheap ones.  You don’t need to be a wealthy housewife to wear beige.  Experiment with different skin tones.  Colour doesn’t need to disappear from your outfit.  Individualise neutral pieces with bold patterns and bright colours.

Me and my love

Me and my love will consistently pop up from now on.  Random purchases I have made or pieces I aspire to have will be featured.  Today I want to show you a pair of shoes made by Chloe.  They retail around $900 at David Jones.  The pictures I found don't honestly capture their magnificence but rest assured they would make any heart race.  The back detail is what makes them truly special.  Woven leather takes these shoes from a plain heel to sexy sophistication.  The heel size is comfortable and isn't going to get you rushed to the emergency department.  No matter what season they would be a wonderful everyday shoe.  As it is winter here I tried them on with opaque stockings, surprisingly they suit that style.  I can see them matched with a flirty summers dress, a classic clean business skirt or hidden elegance amongst a quirky miss-mash of clothes.

Ride in style

Every second person in Melbourne (especially Brunswick St) rides a bicycle.  This is especially true if you are a 'try-hard alternative' who mixes a 70s getup with a classic, old-school bike.  I guess it was only a matter of time before stylish accessories became available for the "trendy bike rider".  If you want to see how to spend money on practical, yet lets face it, stupid accessories then head to Cycle Style.

Pattern Me Up

Look outside.  Go on, look.  I bet it looks cold, doesn't it?  It is winter.  Well ok it's autumn but it feels like winter.  We can't escape it.  I don't care if you curl up in bed, hugging a hot water-bottle, clenching your eyelids shut, dreaming of heat, winter is on our doorsteps.  I have worn a scarf and coat nearly every day this week.  It is rather depressing.

The only benefit is I get to wear a whole new side of my wardrobe.  There is another benefit to winter; I even get to expand my underwear collection.  Stockings, specifically patterned stockings, are spilling out of my drawer.  I can't get enough of them.  They are amazing.  They easily add colour and intrigue to a boring outfit.  I truly believe that stockings are massively warmer than trousers.  You know when it rains and you are wearing jeans, the water flickers onto your trousers so much that your leg (and jeans) get soaked?  Well with stockings that doesn't happen.

I must admit they do have a bad point, if you aren't careful they rip.  They are also a little pricey BUT they look fantastic.  Once you try them I swear you will never go back.  To top it all off stockings pulls all those flabby bits in.  The bum that was slightly droopy, gone.  The stomach that jiggled, gone.  The thighs swishing to their own beat, gone.

The brands I've found that have the best style and 'strength' are Alannah Hill, Leona Edmiston and Platinum.

So go on, give them a little try.  I promise you will not be disappointed.

Love Me.

Cross my fingers, hope my brain doesn't fail me

I'm breathing again.  We I'm kind of breathing again.  I have a 'permanent' work experience placement at The Fashion Journal.  I am insanely excited.  Now I'm stressing over what to wear.  Will I do a good job?  Am I suited for this type of career?  I guess I'll find out soon enough.  A mix of emotion is bubbling through me.  I can't wait for Friday to come (the day I start) but I also can't wait for it to be over.  I'll let you know how it goes.  Wish me luck.

The Wanderer

Therese Rawsthorn has shown her S/S 2010/11 collection at the Rosemount Australian Fashion Week.  The collection is titled ‘The Wanderer’.  It is about a girl on a road trip through “arid countryside”.  I am unsure how much I like it.  I can see the talent beyond each garment but it leaves me somewhat a little empty.  I am not inspired and I don’t want to buy it.  There was only one look I really loved; a cream shirt and black pants.  Both pieces loosely hang off the body yet the figure beneath it remains.  It is elegant, feminine and practical.

For this collection Rawsthorn embellished hand knits, embroidered leather, made entire garments woven from corsetry elastic, used silks, and washed cotton and wool.

The collection intertwines pieces that starkly contrast each other.  Within each outfit she’s designed body-conscious pieces. Flesh-coloured bike shorts and tight straps ever so slightly exposed beneath another piece of clothing.  Rawsthorn is rather adept at making these body-conscious elements subtle and barely noticeable.  They add intrigue to the clothes without being overbearing.

Beyond this Rawsthorn’s collection comprises flowing dresses, over-sized vests and jackets, loose shirts and extra-wide trousers.

Lisa Ho at RAFW

Lisa Ho presented a stellar S/S 2009/10 collection at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week.  She mixes classic pieces with bold colour and prints.  Her maxi dresses are amazing.  To be honest I am a maxi dress hater, generally because they really don't suit my body type.  She has converted me.  I don't think I'll ever be able to wear them but now I wish I could.  Her dresses show the natural curve and elegance of a woman's body.  Who needs plastic surgery when a good designer can nip/tuck you with material.  I could gush over this collection for ages but instead scroll down and take a look for yourself.

A rant of a thousand questions

When did it become normal for people to go to university looking like a hobo?  Why on earth do young women where tights and hoodies to lectures and tutorials?  Why do they then add - to this already atrocious look - THONGS?  Why do they saunter around pretending they look good?

Why do they I have to overhear them bitch about someone they believe can't dress?  Do they not have a mirror?  How can they think exposure of the shape of their genitals is any better than a girl with a bad pair of boots?  At least she is trying to look nice.  Just because she missed doesn't make her down-falls any worse than yours.

Where did all the people go that woke up in the morning and actually considered what they looked like?  Where are the skirts?  Where are the pretty shoes?  Where are the nice tops?  Where are the luscious coats?  Where did the hats go?  Or even the lipstick?  When did it not become acceptable to wear heels to university?  Where did the glamour go?

Dressing in tights, wearing thongs, having a high-side ponytail, making yourself look as ugly as possible doesn't somehow make you are a true women.  It says - to me at least - that you don't want to be desirable anymore.  You don't need to I suppose.  The many little sluts in our world just need to be able to give a good blow job and leave.  There is no chase.  There is no longing to be with someone.  There are just tights and hoodies thrown on the floor.  I suppose that is better than them being on a woman's body.

I'm glad I got that rant out of my system.  Till next week.

Hello Lover

Today I got to thinking about guilty pleasures.  I am consumed in them.  Chocolate, lollies, clothes, reading and perhaps my most favourite, fantasizing about my very own pair of Jimmy Choos or Manolos.

If I was transported into Disney's Aladdin, I know exactly what I would ask from my friendly genie.  There is nothing more I could wish for than a wall of spectacular shoes in every imaginable colour and style.  I'd go as far to say I might pee my pants with excitement.

So today, here in this very blog, I am going to show you a pair of shoes that have become my newest guilty pleasure.  If somebody gave me these shoes - size 9 1/2 if anybody is willing - they could get me to do pretty much anything.  I can't deny it, high heels are my biggest weakness.

If you have the money and the access to these shoes, please, i beg of you, do not let me know because it may just send me spiraling into a deep state of jealousy. I suppose I must reside myself to the fact that although I can't afford them, others can.  If you are interested they are from Jimmy Choo Spring/Summer 2010 collection and they're called Zoom.

Raise respect by raising your pants?

Boys and girls, sittin’ in a tree
K.I.S.S.I.N.G
First comes the mods,
Then comes the hippies,
Then comes the saggy pant guys with their undies on display.

Criminology and Fashion; two words that - to most - seem completely separate.  I am here to tell you that, like the rhyme above, fashion can be linked to moral panics and crime. In my legal studies lecture yesterday we looked at a fashion trend that I’m sure you have all seen: the saggy pants.

Interestingly enough this fashion ‘trend’ actually came from the prisons.  The inmates aren’t allowed belts for fear they will commit suicide.  This was the birth of saggy pants, or as Florida legislators like to call them, droopy drawers.  Somehow the hip-hop crowd adopted this trend.  Most guys seem to have embraced this 'fashion movement' and forgot that belts were invented to keep pants above their bum, not below.

Funnily enough politicians in America are calling for saggy pants to become practically illegal.  They want dress codes enforced within all schools to sanction any who dares to kiss and sag.  If you are in need of a giggle check out Senator Eric Adams, a retired police chief, advising society to ‘Stop the Sag’.

Green is the new planet

Trends come and go; they disappear just as quickly as they emerge.  Recently there has been an influx in designers hoping to make one trend last a lifetime.  Car manufacturers, supermarkets, chemical companies and politicians have all started to reduce the impact we make on this planet.  It was only a matter of time before the fashion industry went on a quest to produce garments for the environmentally conscious.

Eco Fashionista is a website devoted to selling clothes for those who wish to limit their environmental footsteps and strive for a greener lifestyle.  They hand pick garments – including accessories – that are both stylish and help to reduce the impact we have on the planet.  It was time for the fashion industry to catch up with the rest of the world and help with sustainability.

As reported in The Age, "Green is not a trend," says retail expert and founder of Country Road Steve Bennett. "Over the next 10 years, the focus will be even more on sustainability and the planet."

Designers all over the world are making it their mission to produce eco-friendly clothes.  Locally designers such as Gorman, Fleur Wood, Cylk Black Label and Arabella Ramsay are all contributing to this new ‘trend’.

Each designer differs in the way they produce and achieve environmentally friendly clothes.  Eco Fashionista explains how they achieve eco-conscious clothes through the use of organic, sustainable or vintage fabrics, conducting eco-friendly production, making small quantities of their clothes to order and striving to produce fair working conditions.

If you want to continue the work of such forward thinking designers then head to the Eco Fashionista website and buy up big.  You can be assured you will not only look good but you are also making the planet look just as sexy.
